elections 2024 : No such thing as a free lunch
20/5/2024
In elections 2024, one of the ANC's final bids in a constantly changing scenario came in the form of a presidential announcement publicised as the signing of the National Health Insurance Bill into law. With a great fanfare, plus the fact that the media team used the Union Buildings as background, this added to the recipe in order to make the occasion more important, not just an election plug.......which it turned out to be. The key to the event was the setting up of a "free" universal health care programme which is to be phased in over an extended and unknown period of time.
Most South Africans paying medical aid premiums were a little shocked at the timing. Once again politicians had crossed the line of privacy and interfered with their private lives. It dawned also that the President had used SARS as the collection tool and indeed have the credentials to be such.
